Larger/nicer and cheaper house in a "bad" town, or smaller and more expensive in good town

Right now I'm trying to choose between an enormous and cheap house but it's in what is considered one of the worst towns of the UK (although a nicer part of it I believe, but still a short drive from some of the most deprived parts of the country).
Or a much smaller house in a nice town which is much more expensive and needs some work. Other houses on the same street have sold for a lot more, so it has huge potential.
I've changed my mind so many times in the last day, I feel like I'll regret whatever I choose.

Location is everything, I'd go for the smaller house. When I first met my husband we lived in one of the worst towns and one day we got in the car to go to work and it wouldn't start - someone had nicked the car battery and very nicely, locked the car for us again.£216 saved 24 October 20144

Might help if the locations were shared as things are rarely black and white.0

What if I said there's more than two houses for sale in the country?
You're having reservations about both so maybe neither is the right one and you should wait for something that lands in the middle, size and location wise.0 -
Having lived in a 'worse area' to get a better place - I'd now choose living in the better area and getting a smaller place.2

Location! I've never even contemplated a bad location to get a bigger property. Always bought what I can afford in the area I want to be in. Would rather an ugly house in a nice location if it came to that.2024 wins: *must start comping again!*0

Burnley isn’t that bad! I know people who live there and it’s like all northern towns. Some bits are ok and some bits aren’t.

The bad location is Burnley. But in a nicer part of it... your money goes so much further. I basically found my dream home. Really close to nice countryside as well.
