Renewing car insurance now that I don't have a job. Can I claim to be employed?
Options
Basically I wanted to renew my car insurance today as it is 23 days before the renewal date so it should be cheaper, however I realised today that it will be more expensive now because I lost my job in November. I'm wondering however if I can say that I am employed as I signed up to work with an agency in November and did several shifts with them before Christmas, I haven't been fired or let go or anything by them and they still send me shifts by email (we're asked to work on an as and when basis, zero hours I suppose it's called) but they haven't booked me since December (I think it's because I'm not trained to use a machine). I am also signed up with an employment agency and I'm doing an assignment with them at the moment but it's just an admin assignment and for the time being I'm only needed once every two months for about 5 hours at a time (yes I know it's a bit strange but I won't bore you with the details!).
I have got an interview on Sunday so I could be employed again soon. I could SORN the car but then I would probably be a lot more depressed, forget how to drive because I haven't been driving for that long (driving for one year, license for 4.5) and then I wouldn't really have a decent way of getting to work if I did get a shift.
Obviously I don't want to commit fraud, so what should I do? Any help appreciated.

You will need to tell them you are unemployed.1

Tell the truth (either unemployed, or zero hours contractor if you could still pick up work) and buy from a company that don't charge for changes to the policy.
When you then get a more permanent job you can update the details and this may result in a part refund of the premium.0 -

Thanks, I'll try them both and see what works. That's really helpful

Thankfully, it might not be that bad as unemployed. Thank you!

Thanks, I've seen that idea but 'retired' and 'houseperson' don't really cover me but I'm going to try some more comparison websites so they might have more options.

This is no help to the OP, but I recall a few years ago I gave up work to become a carer for a relative. At renewal time I phoned the car insurer to discuss the renewal. Although I was unemployed, it was through choice so we discussed the options.
The difference between house husband and unemployed was around £200pa.1
