Facebook Messenger query

I've been using Facebook Messenger for a while on my phone, but only yesterday installed it on my Chromebook. Now, if somebody sends me a message, I get what I think is their profile picture comes up as a round icon thingy against the right-hand edge of my Chromebook screen, I guess as a notification that they've sent me a message. How do I get rid of that when I've done "chatting" with them? And come to that, how do I delete "chats" that are over and done with?
