A warning if you are thinking of planing the bottom of a door

I was asked to plane the bottom of a door to allow it to open and close easily on the installation of new carpet. It was a fire door at the front entrance to a second floor flat.
The door had a kind of brush fitted in a groove down the edge to make a good seal and presumably to stop smoke in the event of a fire.
Anyway, it was a heavy door and I stood it on its edge in the newly-carpeted corridor and planed the bottom down a bit. I then discovered it had made a horrible black mark on the new carpet - as first sight it looked like someone had applied a black Sharpie pen to the carpet along a door-length ruler! The problem seemed to be that the black brush strip was ABSOLUTELY FILTHY!
I managed to clean the mark off with a good hoovering followed by a scrubbing with a piece of the new carpet dampened with water but it's something to be aware of - and it's not as though I dragged the door over the carpet particularly.

Cheers Murmanks! I have to plane a fire door for my daughter in law this week! They've just had new carpets fitted, so you might have saved my life! The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0

This afternoon I planed the bottom of the fire door between my garage and the house. I did it in the garage, it didn't mark the carpet.
