faulty shower

My shower leaked a year ago.  The plumber came and tried to mend it but couldn't - said I needed a new shower, tray, enclosure, tiling.  He supplied and fitted all of it.  He wasn't very competent organising the job but I assumed he was a competent plumber ( all 10s on checkatrade) A year later the shower is leaking when used and water is coming through the ceiling.  Shoudl he fix it free of charge and what are my options if he refuses.

You probably first need to ascertain why it is leaking.  Is it just some sealant that has 'decayed' or is there an underlying problem with joists or floor boarding that has excessive movement.

It could be leaking where the vertical walls meet the shower tray - he sealant is faulty.

Or it could be leaking from the shower plughole where the water drains away - either the sealant has failed there too or the pipework underneath that carries the waste shower water away is broken.

I suppose it could also be leaking where the hot and cold pipework come into the shower on/off control

  • You need to find out where it's leaking from first, then worry about the liability of the plumber and your rights to a repair.

You may have an underlying problem if the same thing has happened again.

There may be some movement somewhere causing the problem. It's a bit unfair to blame a plumber after a year as leaks tend to appear in days from bad workmanship.
