peoples energy credit- how to get it back?

I have received email from British Gas to say the transfer from PE to British (Scottish)Gas is complete and they have received the credit balance from the PE account and applied it to the BG account. It is an eye-watering 4 figure amount. I have checked the BG account and it is saying this

"We can't offer you a credit refund

Paying the same amount every month could mean that during the summer months you might pay more for energy and not use it, and during the winter months need more energy than what you're paying for.

We base your payment amount with the seasons in mind, so we can forecast your plan across the year. Right now, you're in credit by £---- but you'll need that to put towards the cold winter days when they arrive.

Because of this, we aren't able to offer you a refund today.*

* Your monthly payments are forecast based on your current usage. We'll review the forecast on the 28th November 2022"

How do I get my money back? They are asking people to only call if its an emergency

Thanks

Were you expecting an "eye-watering 4 figure" credit amount? What did your last People's Energy bills say?
What are your monthly payments now, and what is your estimated annual bill?

The last statement from PE before they ceased trading showed £300+ credit, (05-09-21) which was fine going in to winter, online live balance showed £600 balance. Final statement 25-01-22 £1000+ balance.
Monthly payments (once BG make their mind up if i am paying too much or too little) £169

    "£169.30 per month Direct Debit

    You're paying too much

(End of plan balance: £784.62 in credit)"

Did you continue paying DDs to PE after they went bust? And does your PE final bill match the BG one - same dates, same meter readings, same credit transferred?
If everything checks out, you can (and should) ask for a refund or, alternatively, a reduction in your monthly payment. Some people have reported getting good results via their web chat function; you also have the bonus of making a transcript in case of future problems.
