Moving home, switch or not to switch?

We're moving home at the end of the month, our gas and electricity supply was previously with Green energy, but got moved to Shell when it collapsed. It's only been the last few weeks that we've had our credit from Green moved to our shell account so fortunately after a long wait the billing is finally resolved.

I noticed on the Shell website it says: 'Take us with you, Did you know that you can take your energy tariff with you even if your new home has an existing energy supplier?"
So it seems we can provide the final meter readings online at the date of moving and transfer our energy tariff after moving.

Does anyone see any issues doing this, I assume we will remain on the same variable price capped tariff. To be honest after all the time it's taken to do the last switch I really don't want to go through the hassle again and move to yet another supplier.

I'm just worried that we'll be placed on a fixed tariff rate by stealth, as there's a serious lack of meaningful information on the Shell website, other than this patronising video: https://help.shellenergy.co.uk/hc/en-us/articles/360001033697-What-do-I-do-if-I-m-moving-home-

When you move to the new property you will be on a deemed tariff with the existing supplier.  This deemed tariff will be at the Ofgem price cap just like your current SoLR tariff with Shell.

So the question is, what is there to gain from “taking” Shell with you? You’re just starting an extra switch - you will always have that deemed tariff with the existing supplier in the new place, you can’t avoid it.  Be easier just to keep them.

    1) Take photos of your meters as you leave your current property. Get in touch with Shell, tell them you’ve moved out and give them your readings. They will generate a final bill and close your account.

    2) Take photos of the meters when you get the new place. Find out the existing supplier and pass them the date you became responsible for the property along with the meter reads. They will open an account for you. Just be sure they put you on the Variable deemed tariff at the Ofgem cap - many will try and persuade you into a fix, especially if doing it via their website.
  • Good advice, thanks!
  • Yup another vote here for just going with whoever the deemed supplier is at the new property, Actually surprised companies still have things on their website saying "take us with you", they will be glad to be shut of all SVT customers if they had their way.
