Mortgage free by 50…. Hopefully!

  • Hello and welcome. You sound very similar to how I was when i started this journey. Never made OPs, didn’t see much point etc. don’t every doubt how much those little OPs add up. I keep my mortgage provider very busy at times with pennies being OP’d. Although I’m was aiming for 2023 mortgage freedom it’s likely to be by the time I’m 50 in 3 years. So I’ll follow you along your journey.

Surveys. Cashback. Savvy shopping. They all add up.

    Good luck.

  • Thank you so much. I just love how everyone is so supportive. I guess it’s because everyone is ultimately on the same journey - some might be further along and nearing the end, some, like me, are just at the start. But we’ve all got the same end goal.

I was comfortable becoming MF at the end of our full term (by the time I am 55) without ever OPing. But now i have committed myself I am looking forward to becoming MF before I’m 50 or maybe even sooner.

I have tried surveys in the past but found them to take so long for so little reward. But I have signed up to Pr0lific but they don’t seem to be accepting anyone at the moment so have been added ti the waiting list.

  • I didn't do so well with the surveys either but they certainly work for some.

Well done on the first op. Every little helps! I think op can get addictive.

  • I'm watching this post with interest. Your situation is very similar to mine.
I'm 41 years old and want to pay my mortgage off by the time I am 50. I have £163k left to pay.
I started overpayments just over a year ago and have been fortunate enough to OP £500 a month.
It really is a great feeling to watch the mortgage drop each month. I have the HSBC app so I can see the payments going in each month.

Good luck with it. We hopefully both will be mortgage free around the same time
  • I’ve tried a lot of survey sites over the years. You gov is a good one. Pinecone. And prolific.

  • Hi Cambs_Chap, just been catching up with your diary  It sounds like we have very similar timeframes for wanting to be mortgage free so I'll keep you company. Looking forward to hearing when you've made your first OP!

  • Thanks everyone for your support. It’s nice to hear and read diaries of people with similar goals, time frames, amounts etc.

I’m just juggling the various pots and budgets around to see how much OP we can make. We started our MFW dream midway through this month so it feels likes all our budgets for various things haven’t quite caught up. Think I’ll just need to do some sort of balancing sum this month, but from March onwards it should all work out nicely.

Had an email from nursery today saying that fees are increasing by 7.5% from April. I knew an increase was coming but wasn’t expecting Ito be this much 😖

Ouch! I remember paying nursery fees very well. When ds left nursery nearly 17 years ago, I was paying over £700 a month for his full time placement. I actually can't believe I paid it! 😱
