Actually, the same thermometer dropped to 0C subsequently. Furthermore, my ear thermometer (infra red) arrived and showed my forehead temperature was 34C when the range starts at 36C. But used in my ear it was mid range so that's reassuring. I would have to remove far too many clothes to check other parts of my anatomy.Mstty said
But yes it is a little insane to see that figure in a house.
I made two changes since the photos were taken. First, I found trousers which go over the top of my ski trousers and down insulated trousers. It helps protect the layers underneath. Second, I swapped out one of the Decathlon jackets with anonymous polyester insulation, and replaced it with a thinsulate lined jacket. Even warmer!
I can't see how anyone adding these kinds of layers to what they already wear is in any way risky or dangerous.

Hearts Lad, not a dig but I guess the above text in an earlier post of yours could be an example of part of the "possibly dangerous" for newbies who don't know what they are doing . People who aren't used to this sort of lifestyle could be heading for trouble if they start pfaffing about with various heaters in a bathroom! It's like if someone just decided to buy a load of wood for their chimney which hasn't been used in 20 years and started a fire out of desperation without a) the know how or b) thinking things through. Some may just jump in feet first with some ideas without a thought.I used mains electricity for up to 30 mins with a 1kw fan heater to take the chill off the bathroom but with only 6 panels for solar energy in mid winter, I face a problem. I bought a 500w ceramic heater which should blow hot air straight at me. Electricity in a bathroom? I know it's risky. Not yet tried. It will be powered from 2 car batteries and an inverter, so I can monitor energy usage more closely. The 2 car batteries will be recharged on sunny afternoons from the solar panels. I also bought a butane gas heater to see what that's like. Dangerous again with the risk of carbon monoxide so I will place a detector in the bathroom.

OK- valid concern, although it's an ancillary consequence. For anyone in danger of dying from hypothermia, how do they currently deal with using the bathroom?Max68 said:

No idea!! For my part I'm having a lot more hot baths, saves on the heating, although obviously not hot water and keeps me warmer for a couple of hours...HertsLad said:

I assume nearly everyone has common sense. If anyone is still shivering then they need to change something like I do. I put on more layers, or superior layers, or go out for a walk, or hold my hands over a gas hob for a couple of minutes. They might use heating to some extent, or ride round on a bus all day, using a bus pass, to keep warm.[Deleted User] said:

Maybe some people would like to experiment with the ways you've put forward, but aren't willing to do something completely different in some of the coldest temperatures for a long time, not knowing what the results may be. An extra layer and turn the heating down for a while - see how it goes - and then take it further if it seems sensible. ie take it slowly, no risks.0

I think that's what most sensible people take from this post.GaleSF63 said:Maybe some people would like to experiment with the ways you've put forward, but aren't willing to do something completely different in some of the coldest temperatures for a long time, not knowing what the results may be. The other, overly negative comments to the OP are what they are, can't ever stop them.
How other people live is an interesting story to me and others especially with this cold spell that I thought would be extremely challenging (only to find he was toasty in Tunisia lol)1 -

Naked flames and all those man made fibres...what could possibly go wrong!!!!! Mind those cuffs.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
Does this forum have a bug? When I go into a quoted section to trim it a bit, I can't get back to the section where I type my reply. On my desktop PC browser I can go into html mode as a workaround but my phone doesn't seem to offer this option. Any thoughts?2
