Have solar should I get a smart meter?

Hello, I have solar and recieve fit payments.

Should I get a smart meter as my supplier keeps messaging me to arrange.

If I get a smart meter will my 50% assumed export turn to a deemed payment as this isn't what I want and I've heard this may happen.

Please could someone with solar and a smart meter advise?

You can have a smart meter with solar.
By the letter of their supply conditions your FIT supplier should switch you to metered export, but in practice they rarely do unless you request it.
I have a smart meter, solar and a FIT with EON Next. When the smart meter was installed I informed EON Next and they said I'd stay on deemed export unless I wanted to switch.

You have the right to forego the deemed export element of the FIT Scheme and you can get SEG payments instead. Octopus is currently offering 7.5p/kWh on its fixed SEG scheme and more for Agile Outgoing SEG payments. These are the recent SEG payments for my DNO area:

I'm also still receiving the deemed 50% export payments despite having a smart meter.
  • Thanks, I know everyone house is different but do you find you export more than 50%?

I haven't had a smart meter (export meter) for long enough to know for sure!
I'm importing around 2200kWh/yr and, looking at our usage on dull days throughout the year, am probably using 3200kWh/yr.
So I'm self-consuming around 1000kWh/yr but generating 2600kWh/yr. Self-consumption is therefore around 40% and export must be close to 60%.

  • I had a smart meter installed about 7 years ago and OVO forced me to move day 1 onto metered export. That was unexpected.

Anecdotally at least, the risk seems higher if you have the FiT with your import provider.
If not then the mechanisms to inform the FiT provider of the meter change seem to be less well developed...
It is however perfectly valid to move people to metered export though so the risk is always there...
