Post Office - Say They Delivered But Didn’t

Options
Hi guys,

The Post Office say they delivered my package (worth £50) when I was on holiday - as per their Covid protocols they signed for it on my behalf and left it outside as the house was empty - apparently.

The package is nowhere to be seen and as per Post Office protocols the retailer that I bought the item from raised the complaint on my behalf.

The Post Office have denied my claim saying it was delivered. I paid through PayPal and they denied my claim via them too as the Post Office said it was delivered.

This feels very unfair to me, the Post Office are denying me fair compensation and I feel like I don’t have any way to fight this.

Do you know of any way I can get a fair and just outcome here?

All the best,

JD

You say you were  on holiday.

Was there somebody living in the house while you were away?
  • This has nothing to do with the PO, they don't deliver parcels.

You need to take this up with the retailer, it is their responsibility to deliver it to you (and not just the doorstep of an address) and as they've failed to do so, they need to send a replacement or reimburse you.

Bear in mind though that they've indirectly made it obvious that they're not interested in doing this so you may have a fight on your hands, including potentially going to court.

You can try and take it up with the retailer, you have no claim against the Post Office at all, as they have nothing to do with the process, the retailer might have a claim against Royal Mail, but you do not.

The concept of "fair and just" is subjective, personally I would not order goods to be delivered when I was on holiday. Knowing how many couriers will leave things at the front of the property that is just asking for trouble.

    It’s the retailers problem.
what is the retailer saying now the claim has been denied?

did you order before going on holiday or did it arrive at an unexpected time?

Avoid PayPal if you can. Ideally use credit card if not debit card.

    Can you appeal paypal?
  • Also how is coronavirus support related?

delivery company policies changed a great deal due to covid
many companies Royal Mail included would previously leave a note if no one was in and take the parcel back to the depot and they would not just abandon parcels.
since the pandemic a lot of companies leave parcels on the doorstep.
So this issue is because of covid.

i would argue that dumping it on the doorstep is not a delivery (legally) but the op needs to take it up with the retailer as that’s who they have a contract with.

The Post Office will only refund the sender if they claim , not the recipient .
You can ask the Post Office to investigate  and give you denial of receipt e-mail .
Give this e-mail to the seller who must refund you .
They can then make a claim with the Post Office.
I know this because Royal Mail delivered 3 parcels to my wheelie bin on bin collection day , by the time I came home the bin was empty.
