ESA qualifying NI

Hi I am currently claiming Tax Credits (self emoloyed) but due to worsening health conditions am hoping to move to ESA.  According to my online NI record I am paid up for the last 5 years.  My daughter said that when she claimed her online records said she had paid hers, but they refused her claim as they weren't the right kind of contribution.  I have searched online and can't find anything relating to this, so I wondered if anyone had any knowledge of this, please?

For New style ESA as self employed you will need to have paid class 2 NI contributions in tax years 2019-20, 2020-2021. You will also need a fit note from your GP. Do also be aware that NsESA is taxable income.
If your daughter is claiming child benefit or any other benefit such as Universal Credit, Income Related ESA/JSA and Income Support these alone won't qualify her for NsESA.

    Eligibility

To get New Style ESA you usually need to have been working within the last 2 to 3 years, and have made (or been credited with) Class 1 or Class 2 National Insurance contributions.

This can be through employment or self–employment.

If you’re not sure how much National Insurance you’ve paid, you can check your National Insurance record online.

You will also need to have a fit note (sometimes called ‘sick note’ or ‘doctor’s note’) but you can start making your claim before you have one. If you have only just become ill you can self–certify for the first 7 days.

Depending on your circumstances you may want to look at UC too.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
