Old chimney?

Hi
I am having issues with what I believe is some kind of chimney in our kitchen. We live in a terraced house. In the corner of the kitchen there is what seems to be an old chimney. It is kind of a triangle shape , looking like it has had some of the structure removed at some point. In the bedroom above it is a square in the corner so still full structure.  I remember when we first moved in we attempted to remove some of the lower part but it made such a mess we ended up blocking the bottom off. Lately we have had water which seems to be coming from this area. The first time I noticed it there was black marks on the tiles & a black "puddle" on the worktop. Since then there has been small amounts of water. I'm not sure where the water is coming from. There is no chimney outlet/chimney pot. I assume water is coming through a small gap at the bottom where the power cable from the boiler is threaded through.  It's driving me mad! Any ideas where the water would be coming from? would there be pipes in there? Thanks in advance 🤞

    Some pictures will probably help.

Do you notice the wet patches after it's been raining? You may need cowls on top of chimney pots.

It's possible the space has been used for running pipework.
  • Hi, there's no chimney pot or outlet anywhere so I'm assuming it was removed a long time ago. I've been up in the loft & there's nothing up there & I can't see any tiles out of place. I can't see that any of the pipes from the boiler go into it.  It's never done this before & we've been in the house about 30 years 🤷‍♂️ I saw on another thread that the old houses used to have a heater called a copper in the kitchens but I still don't understand where the water is coming from.

Terraced house?  Ask your neighbours what they have in that position - someone may have useful information.

Also wrap some kitchen towel round where you suspect the water is coming from - easy to see if it gets damp.

  • I've done this to make sure it was coming from where I thought & it does get damp but not enough to account for the amount that I saw initially on the worktop.
