But if you don't want any contactless facility, and you refuse to install an app for even five minutes to switch it off, you can also vote with your feet.

Perhaps the OP can't install the app?  I know I can't.  Not because I'm unwilling particularly but my phone is barely smart enough to handle making calls let alone help with my banking.

If your bank doesn't provide the facilities that are important to you (in this case being able to switch off contactless by phone) then switch to a bank that does eg as you say, nationwide.

You can get a basic smart phone that will run the app for peanuts

Android 7.0 or iOS 12.0 are the current minimum - iphone 5S runs 12.0 or a iphone 6 can be had for under £100 for example. You may choose not to use a smart phone but that is the way the world is moving.

OP not being willing to give the bank their number "to avoid scams" is also odd, the bank won't be calling to do scams (insert joke here), automated dialling software by scammers will pick the number eventually and modern smart phones use block lists shared by providers to stop them anyway so the bank not having the number doesn't benefit OP in any way

You can get a second hand Galaxy A40 for as little as £30 on ebay - that runs Android 11 so should support the app for a few years at least

That might be so, but they indicated they do not want to, which is different and for which it's appropriate to say, choose elsewhere.

The OP mentioned that they did not want to give the bank their phone numbers, so they may have difficulty opening a new account elsewhere - I’m pretty sure that providing at least one phone number is mandatory for all new applications .

Yes. Which again shows that if they choose not to have a phone number they're choosing to keep the contactless?

It's like having a passbook, banks shouldn't have to pander to the choosy forever.
