200quid debt

Martin wrote:: """Two singles live alone in Oct, then meet. They each get a £200/yr discount, then they move in together, so they've only one bill, and it'll just have one £40/yr added. ""

So extrapolating, since myself and partner live here and only I am on the bill, if suddenly she becomes the bill payer at the right time does that mean we escape this debt payment ?

I'm not interested in the "ethics", only the stone cold facts and liability.
I didn't ask for this loan - not in my name,

No, there is no escape because the levy will be applied to every household in the country, not to individual people (so not in your name, you will be pleased to know).

Less flippantly, see Martin's explainer of how the £200 thing works at https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6332457/martin-lewis-how-the-new-flat-rate-200-energy-bill-loan-really-works/p1 (transcript is a few posts down)

  • Firstly the 'debt' as you call it isn't in your name .
Secondly when your account is credited with £200 , as long as you keep on paying the correct amount for your usage , there will be enough credit on the  account to pay back the 5x£40 ....simples.
I can't believe people are being so pathetic about being offered help . Their only problem would be if over the 5 years they  pay less than they  should and do end up in debt through their  own mismanagement.
