Shoppers wearing disposable gloves rant!

434 Posts

I work for a supermarket. Disposable gloves wearing by customers has decreased a lot. Why are some still wearing them?
They don’t understand that those in medical and care work change their gloves very frequently - ie between patients or more regularly if got a messy job to do. These people are wearing the same gloves in different shops and sometimes over several days. As saw a couple wearing gloves which were absolutely filthy.🤬 I bet these gloves contain more nasties than unsantised hands!🤮 I over emphasised my application of hand sanitiser to them to give them the hint.
Most of these customers who wear gloves pay with cash! If you are that paranoid with germs etc - you certainly don’t pay with cash!🤔
Today, I changed some advertising banners in the car park. Saw a man packing his car with shopping. Then took off his disposable gloves with his teeth grabbing the fingers🤢.
None of my colleagues or other shop workers wear these gloves. Actually my employer has advised us not to wear them as cross contamination and false sense of safety. I sanitise hands when handling cash and wash when I go on breaks and finish work.
Think more is needed to inform these people that gloves are worse than they made to be especially when worn over several days!

I've only worn gloves when picking up loose fruit and veg where it's been a legal requirement to do so (not in the UK). I'd never re-use gloves though as that's just stupidity, just as I don't re-use disposable masks (normally changed daily, but using a fabric mask over the top which is changed every 2-3 days and washed after this).
The pandemic has made me realise how much I was touching and steps have been proactively taken to stop this. This could probably do more to stop the spread of Covid than anything else.
I can spell, my iPad can't.
