    Got a garden shredder ?
Feed the paperwork through it, and then bung it on the compost heap.
Good idea. Wouldn't the lead in the paper ink get into the compost and then to the plants?
There is no lead in ink. The black pigment is often based on carbon which isn't going to hurt plants.

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

I have been composting all my paper that comes through the door for a few years. A4 gets ripped up into about 6 pieces and within a few weeks of being on the compost heap it's gone (well summer that is).
The ink from what I understand is soya based so not harmful to the soil.

However dumping all the paper on the compost heap this time of year in one go is a no no. Compost ideally is made up of a 40-50% mix of green (grass, and leaves (not dried)), and a 40-50% mix of brown (paper, cardboard, straw, wood chippings).

The cheapest option is to buy a shredder.  I shred anything with personal details.  The council will then take it as part of the recycling collection as long as it’s bagged, but I put it in my wormery.  Not only do the worms love it but it keeps them warm.

Or use shredded paper for insulation for haybox cooking - very moneysaving!

As said above, just tear off personal details and just mulch those bits. Put the rest in with the recycling.
    No costs involved
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Remove name, bank details, address and if HMRC, the NI number and / or UTR number (or the part that has these on. Then put the rest in recycling.
I used to tear up by hand agree very therapeutic. If you have a log burner, mush in water and compress into bricks to burn later maybe?
May you find your sister soon Helli.

  • I can't manually shred it manually as there may be about 5000 or more pages and I need to move out shortly so can't carry it around too.
The hiring option I saw is about 60£ day which is way too expensive. We are in a small flat so other suggestions provided are not really practical.
Not sure if there is place where I can drive up and give it for shredding/recycling for cheaper price.
No one freecycle is offering a shredder for even borrowing yet.

I've just googled "domestic shredding service Suffolk" and there are 12 firms listed. Have you tried ALL of them?

When I had a huge amount of paperwork to destroy I used a commercial company.  They uplifted all the bags, took it all away and dealt with it.  They are used by Police Scotland, courts and hospitals.  There was the option to take the bags to their site and watch it all being destroyed.  It may not have been cheap but it was well worth it.

I had checked websites but based on your suggestion, I called a few. Some have very high charges (minimum 6 boxes 80£) etc.
One of them was perfect : https://alancookremovals.co.uk/shredding 6£/per bag. They come home collect.

Unfortunately, such options are hard to find. Needs better marketing I guess.
