What is the cheapest and easiest paper shredding option around Suffolk?

Got about 2 medium boxes of papers of  a friend to be shredded. Has statements from banks, credit cards, HMRC letters and passport photo copies etc.
What is the cheapest and easiest paper shredding option around Suffolk?
What is the typical cost ?
Can we just tear each of the papers into 4 or 8 etc and mix it up and throw it in the recycling or garbage ?
Please advice. Thank you.

  • Personally, I cut out any identifiable details from such paperwork and set that aside for shredding. The rest - ie the bulk of the paper - can be recycled.

Shredders are available for about £30 from Amazon, or you can buy scissors with multiple blades for closer to £10.

Do you have a 'Library of things' nearby? Some public libraries offer rental of small household items such as shredders - it would be worth googling that.

    Got a garden shredder ?
Feed the paperwork through it, and then bung it on the compost heap.

Or, if you know anyone who works in an office and there isn't a huge amount, you could ask for them to dispose of it in the confidential waste bin?

When my shredder went kaput I managed to get a nearly new one on Freecycle.

Ask on Freecycle and check the Marketplace in your area on Facebook. Someone will probablyhave one they don't need.

Good idea. Wouldn't the lead in the paper ink get into the compost and then to the plants? May be there are other more harmful pesticides and fertilisers going in so this is negligible. I heard used plastic is now being used for roads in few countries. This will get into the groundwater :(

Very good idea. But, I will need couple of buckets or couple of times in a bucket !
  • Sometimes I just sit quietly by the bin with a pair of scissors and cut up all the paperwork. It can be quite therapeutic!
