  • Some posters will no doubt use the headline in today’s Daily Telegraph as confirmation that we can expect smart meter disconnections when electricity demand exceeds supply:

National Grid scheme to ration households' power use at peak times

It could be argued that if this was to happen then all electricity supplied during the period would be free. :o

With the rise of standing charges, it has the illusion of being free.

Doesn't strike me as being potentially lucrative, it's a maximum of 20 hrs usage, and you have to use an unknown amount less energy than they reckon you typically would...

I'm not eligible as I don't have a smart meter (I will get one, just haven't had one installed yet) but I don't think I'd be in a hurry to sign up for what might amount to a couple of quid.

Sounds good having access to cheaper electricity, even if its only a two hour window.

However, 'surge' pricing will be the norm soon!

"Ofgem will be granted new powers in May allowing it to change the way smart meters operate, so that data about usage is sent to suppliers every 30 minutes by default.

Suppliers will be able to use the data to change consumer energy prices as much as 48 times per day, allowing them to charge households more at peak times."

    Huge smart meter shake-up confirmed

But the way it reads , the consumer will still be able to opt out of 30 min. readings. Not everyone can rearrange their lives and purchase more sophisticated leccy devices to take advantage of cheapest times.

Yes, and those people will most likely pay more eventually.
I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up something like "50p/unit peak rate, 30p off peak, 10p between 2am and 6am", and those who refuse a TOU tariff just get a flat 50p/unit charge.
