Payment really should have been made online.Answer blooming loads…lol.
In reality there is no 100% safe way. Best if taking cash is to go to a bank and cash the money over the counter before releasing the car.
As we know the OP has now left FD.

How many times do we hear "Never Advised" by bank. Yet here we have a case of "Clear Advice" that Op thinks is not relevant to them...Life in the slow lane0 -
Not a major need just a promised service offering that seems to … erm … have evaporated…!0

they advertise you can use HSBC branches but not specifically that you can use machines to pay in cash.Is the problem that your near nest HSBC branch has removed counter services?
That to me is the bigger issue, that you can go to a branch but that branch can no longer serve you.But again if branch service is a big deal then a phone-centric bank (which First Direct has been for 30+ years) probably isn’t best.0 -

The present is the crossroads of both. :cool:1

Who buys or sells a car for that much cash these days?

Ultimately the issue sits with HSBC. As they need to upgrade their system to work with Mastercard. Clearly it is a very low priority at the moment, but will be a issue when HSBC switch to Mastercard which they will at some point. As they are just using FD as a testbed to iron out any issues.Life in the slow lane0

It will also be an issue with First Direct too. Don't think they are blameless.
They have effectively crippled (through a commercial decision for their benefit) what was formerly quite a good setup.
You'd have the good service of FD on the phones and the HSBC branch/ATM network for which you could actually do banking in - depositing cash/cheques, getting statement information, paying off your FD credit card etc. I think the sheen of their good service has dampened somewhat over the years.
You can tell this was a poor execution and rushed. The fact that none of the card-reliant HSBC facilities (and integration) function at launch and months after is a glaring omission, such as the OP and the paying-in machine deposits. Same with mini statements being unavailable, balances not being wholly accurate.
The other thing they completely neglected to mention was the fact that if you had an FD credit card you can't pay it off via the cash machine anymore. It was quite handy, however, was completely unmentioned in any of the literature. The attention to detail to this project has been poor.
It has been nearly six months since I have had this Mastercard and not a peep from them about how they are getting on with fixing these "temporary" problems or some time indication of when it will be fixed, which is completely unprofessional.
I can understand these side-effects being there for a selection of trialists who have actively opted in for wanting to use this new card.
Sadly the clients didn't have any choice in the matter to be a guinea-pig for the bank. I would have happily kept my Visa as it would have had access to all the facilities I used for the past 15 or so years I have has this account open.I barely use the FD debit card or credit card these days, I have other cards which I can get rewards on and just pay off in full monthly.
Even the aesthetics of the card are not great - the card doesn't even have the new logo (which they have no doubt spent lots of money designing). Completely missing in any way shape or form, and the card looks like it was knocked out overnight...

I went into HSBC this morning (Saturday). As a new First Direct customer, it was my intention to pay in a cheque for £1000 to earn the £150 bonus.
Waste of time really. As mentioned in this thread, the chap I spoke to mentioned the Mastercard problem, added to which they had no counter services with it being Saturday - pathetic!
Fortunately, there was a main Post Office nearby, and I was able to conduct my business there, putting my cheque in a First Direct envelope provided. After entering my sort code and account number on the cover, I gave it to the chap on the counter to send off to FD.
Hopefully, this will show on my account by Wednesday at the latest, and I hope to receive the £150 bonus shortly after.1 -
