PIP Backdating

I was awarded PIP last week after a previous rejected claim was reassessed due to the change in the way it is assessed/scored.

There's no mention of it being backdated though. I've read articles saying previous failed attempts of getting PIP could be backdated to May 2016, and my initial claim was from August 2016.

Will it get backdated? And if so, is it done automatically or do I have to contact them.

Thanks in advance.

If it is a revision of a previous decision it should be backdated to the date of that decision which has now been determined to be incorrect.

    What information have you received?
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Does the first page of the award letter not give details of when PIP was awarded from (and to).

I've only received an award letter, which show payments starting from when they made the decision. I didn't even know why it was being reviewed again until I saw it was because of a change in assessment policy in a newspaper article.

Yes it says when it's from, which is the date they awarded it, but I think it's meant to be backdated, from what I've read.

Couple of questions if I may....

Did you challenge the original decision?
Did you reapply or did they send you a letter advising you that you where effected by the change?

Usually PIP is back dated to the date you applied, so if your first application was in May 2016 and you reapplied in Jul 2021, although your assessment and decision is dated 2022, my understanding is it will be back dated to the point of application.

If you didn't re apply and they sent you a letter stating that the change effects you then I'm not 100% sure on what happens then.   Speak to Citizen Advice or HMRC if this is the case.

The decision back in 2016 was appealed against, but still denied.

I reapplied at the end of 2019, but was denied again.

I received a letter last year stating they were reviewing cases due to the change in law/point scoring, and I was going to be reassessed, to which I was granted PIP, I'm not sure which claim was reassessed though. The most recent one still wasn't backdated, just payments starting from when they granted PIP a couple weeks ago.

From what I can find online, it's meant to be backdated to the 2016 application, so not sure why it hasn't been backdated at all.
  • If it's only been a couple of weeks they probably haven't got round to calculating the backpayment yet.  I assume they'll have to go through to see how many applications you have and calculate for how long exactly you were entitled, and then make the payment.
