Bungalow extension

We are in the midlands and have an L-shaped Bungalow with converted loft. We’re hoping to build a two storey extension in the square ‘gap’ to create an addition bedroom and bathroom upstairs and extend the kitchen diner downstairs. Aside from the need to check the foundations and consider the natural light downstairs what I’m wondering is how complicated this is structurally with regards to the roof? The current roof is unusually tall, there’s quite a lot of head room upstairs, but not sure what the simplest thing would be to join the new extension to the original roof?

That's what architects are for!   We can't even comment without any idea of what the house looks like, but everything is possible and there will be numerous options.

Some element of flat roof might be appropriate somewhere if you need extended head height.  Our bungalow looks like it's totally pitched, for example,  but a bird eye view would reveal a significant area of flat roof.

  • Yeah I recognise that we’ll need both an architect and a structural engineer to plan it properly if we were to go ahead. I guess I was just looking for an idea as to whether it sounds complicated or straightforward enough to people with more knowledge than me, as we won’t have an unlimited budget! Thanks though, I knew it was probably a ‘how long is a piece of string’ type question.

  • Floorplan please? The project sound intriguing (and expensive).

  • Ok I’ve done some some quick outlines but I’m no artist!
