Paint for 'quarry' tiles.

Hi.
These are the tiles found on the steps outside many Victorian townhouses in London - typically a terracotta colour.
A friend is sprucing up their house and has found a few of their tiles are cracked and broken. I suggested a reclamation yard for replacements, as they are bound to be worn and weathered, so new ones would stick out. They've since, tho', seen a house on the same street who had theirs painted - a very dark grey/black - which looked good against the white of the door surrounds.
They have a really good handyman, so I suggested - if they are going the painted route - he could simply fill all the missing bits with Toupret or similar to match the tiles, and that would then be ready for painting. Seem like an ok idea?
Any idea of the best paint to then use? Ideally very wear resistant and not slippery.
Thanks :-)

There is exactly that, terracotta tile paint, but the only one I've seen/used has been a redish colour.I ended up filling the cracks and using a terracotta colour wax to hide the join.It took a lot of searching but eventually our brilliant small hardware store of the old fashioned kind. Always fun searching those and they may not have colours in stock but could order.Someone here has done the same with painted step when they had a new door put it. It looks really classy.I'd knock on the door of the house and ask, or put a note through.Perhaps not say he want's to copy but just some paint and where from
