Can't get on a website... but apparently it's just me?

Since last night I've been trying to look at a site my sister linked me. I've tried clicking the link, but also typing in the address.

- At home, on IE, the page tried to open in another window, but just sat there for ages loading and not getting anywhere.

- On a Mac with Firefox, I get:

'The page isn't redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete
* This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies.'

I've tried changing the firefox cookie settings, but no dice. Sis says she is using the site with no problems where she is.

Here, we're using a netgear router, at home, a BT Homehub (spit). Could they be affecting it? Any ideas as to a cause (or fix?)

TIA

    Both browsers the same?

are you blocking java? does the page need an activeX component? Could be your virus checker.

Anything that has this much trouble opening I'd be highly suspicious of. Like it is just looking for a specific setup ;)
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

If you've tried on both a PC and a Mac, it could be blocked by some security software running on your computer (unlikely because you've tried Mac and PC), or your router may block the address (I don't know if the BT router has options to block address ranges) or even it may be blocked by your ISP, this can happen.

    What's the URL?

You could try and use a public proxy server to see if that allows access to it.
  • The two machines I've tried it on are at different locations, using different routers, different ISPs, and different browsers, in case I didn't make that clear.

I don't know anything about proxies, or how to use them... any pointers?

I can't get into it either, it seems to want session cookies enabled, but still won't work on my system either, so I think it's an issue with the site.

    Have a read of:

    http://www.chooseacottage.co.uk/include/noCookies.asp

But I assume you've done all that anyway...
  • Well, my cookies are always on, but the firefox message suggested I turned them off, so I tried that too. I haven't yet tried messing with IE settings.

Did you find that page by guessing, or were you redirected?

You could try using OpenDNS here.

I googled it and found that page. It's very unusual to have this problem, it's a problem with the site, you shouldn't have to be altering all your security settings (which aren't solving it anyway) just to view one site.

If they can't make their site work with current browser technology, I'd avoid using it.

Think they either have a really crud web designer or have over-engineered their site.

I googled it and got in on the link below on Firefox, but not ie6?

  • Thanks for the observations and suggestions, although I hope that google sig wasn't inspired by me ;) It really shouldn't be necessary to google a site when you have the url, imo :D
