Changing to EON next flex DD

I've been lax with my electric supplier for a few different reasons. I have been paying on receipt of bill for several years now.
I've looked at paying DD but been put off as the price jumps up to a higher amount before committing.

Now with energy prices set to rise significantly, I think I'd be better to set up the DD now as it should give me access to slightly lower charges than if I stay as is? Is my thinking correct?

At the moment the only offer I have to switch is Eon 17 and it's pretty high compared to other prices I've seen quoted on here.

Also, assuming I switch to DD, when would I pay my first payment as I only paid last week?

We don't have a smart meter and not fussed to get one just yet either.

Many thanks

You could disuss with Eon Next about possible direct debit dates, they also do monthly pay on receipt of bill by direct debit, payment gets taken 10-14 days after bill is produced
https://www.eonnext.com/tariff-search#   Next Online v10 Direct Debit Version is existing customer tariff that has been posted about on here,
British Gas appear to be offering cheapest fixed rate tariff for new customers also no exit fees.

Who is your current supplier? Unless they're one of the prepayment-only ones, you should be able to change to DD without switching supplier.
If you have to switch, EDF are taking on customers on their capped flexible rate. You'll need to phone them as you can't get that tariff online.

Am I able to sign up to your Standard Variable tariff as a new customer to EDF?

Yes. Bear in mind we can’t offer you a cheaper Standard (Variable) tariff price than your current energy supplier. Standard (Variable) prices are linked to the Ofgem Price Cap.

You can keep an eye on energy deals by signing up to our energy alerts. We’ll let you know when energy prices are coming down, this means we may be able to offer you a better deal than your current energy supplier when this happens.

If you’re new to EDF and want to take our Standard (Variable) tariff, you’ll need to give us a call to be able to do this, you can’t sign up online. You can then chat with our team about the pros and cons to make sure this is the best option for you at this time.

  • Thanks both,

Sorry, I'm already with EON, just pay on receipt of bill, but looks if I switch to DD I'll have more tariffs open to me?

I can do a two year fix at the moment which is pretty much the same as BG one year option

As bristolleedsfan says, that Next Online V10 is as good a fix as you'll find at present. Most other fixes are worse than the standard NextFlex variable tariff.
Exactly which 2-year fix are you looking at?

  • I only have this on offer at the moment, which would cost me £108 a month, BG was £105 a month for 12 months. Was hoping a slightly better one would come up if I start a DD now.

  • As previously said, there are very few fixed tariffs that work out less than the April '22 cap.  We are in a mess at the moment.  Two choices:  stay on SVT and hope future cap rises are small or negative.  Fix (with little or zero exit fees) and hope future cap prices go up, so at least you have personally saved some money.  At least with a zero exit fee, if prices do come down and you move to a cheaper tariff, you wont have to pay to leave.

It is predicted that prices will rise around a further 20% in October, taking the cap to around £2400 - a £400 increase.  So in  period of 6 months, that is around £1100 increase.

If a fixed rate is more than the April '22 tariff, the only way to work out if it is worth moving onto is calculating how much gas and elec you will use between 1.4.22 and 30.9.22.   Then calculate the cost using both the April '22 cap and the tariff you are interested in.  Then estimate how much you will use between 1.10.22 and 31.3.23 using the April '22 cap + 20% and the tariff you are interested in.   Work out the totals, and whichever is cheapest is the tariff you need to be on.  This is how I worked out whether to fix at the beginning of the January.  In my case (if my estimates are correct) come October, I will be quids in by fixing.  Other people may not so lucky.

Next Online V10 is a lot cheaper than that. It's a loyalty tyariff for existing customers and it might not be visible to you as you're not paying by DD. If you go to the link bristolleedsfan gave - https://www.eonnext.com/tariff-search - and enter your postcode, Next Online V10 should appear in the list.
In your position I would phone EON Next customer service (or webchat, or whatever) and ask specifically if you can change to DD payment and sign up to Next Online V10.
And I wouldn't wait too long; these tariffs come and go, a few days ago it was Next Online V9.

  • Thank you @QrizB EON were closed today, so I opted to set up a DD online, it suggested I paid £42 a month, but as I haven't paid that for a long time I opted for £70 which is slightly above my average monthly bill.
I'll try and get through tomorrow to see what my best option is.
