The French government are paying tens of billions of Euros in direct subsidies to EDF, the French are paying through their energy via general taxation rather than via usage. There is no free money.

Adding to this, per https://data.oecd.org/tax/tax-revenue.htm the French tax burden is 45.43% of GDP, the UK value is 32.77%. To get parity with France we'd need to pay 38% more tax.

The simple answer to "Why has Green electricity gone up so much when it isn't made from gas?"

    is

Because you are paying what it is worth on the open market, not what it costs to produce.
