Might be worth considering getting a credit card to help avoid cash flow issues like this in future. Useful for lots of situations such as pay at pump, hotel deposits, etc - anything where a pre-authorisation is taken and having restricted access to your own money for a while might be an issue. For a CC it only reduces your available limit, rather than preventing you using actual money in your current account.
The duplicate pending transaction came off my account some time in the afternoon on the 8th. Nationwide complaints got back to me and offered £50 compensation, which I accepted on the basis that it is a lot better than nothing. They said it was their fault that the pending transaction “with a zero code” was not removed after 24hrs. My faith in Nationwide is now somewhat restored, I originally moved to them as they offered such a good account for people in financial difficulties (with online banking, debit card, no charges whatsoever, just no overdraft facility) and I was also pleased to be banking with a mutual.
