If he was living in a care home, and the Council arranged/paid for his funeral, then are you sure that he actually had anything to leave?
The Council won't have tried to trace his family to pass on any inheritance - they only look for someone else willing/able to pay the funeral costs.2 -
it is likely in the circumstances that the council will have used any remaining funds to pay for the funeral2

Sorry I phrased it wrong. He was in sheltered accomadation. This was maybe 6 months ago now, and it's only when I saw in the paper his name on a list of names of unclaimed estates that I wondered about it.0

Try https://www.gov.uk/inherits-someone-dies-without-will (but I fear it will only confirm that you have no entitlement and the estate is indeed going to the Crown).Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0
