Do head gasket test kits work in coolant expansion?

As per title.
I bought a head gasket test kit online.
My wife's car has oil in the coolant reservoir. I want to test to see if it has a head gasket issue.
It's possible that it could be a bad oil cooler seal which allows oil to enter the cooling system.
Pack says to put the S shape instrument on the radiator opening. But the car doesn't have one. I only have an expansion tank
