Buying headache-how long to wait?

Made an offer which was accepted on a property 10th October. Informed by both seller and estate agent that the previous buyer pulled out the day before completion as they found a different property. Emphasis placed on needing sale to progress quickly, as she has a purchase ready to complete. Our sale and our purchase were ready in 7 weeks from offer. Our buyer's sale was also ready in this timeframe.
Proposed exchange and completion date for 16th Dec. A few days before, it became apparent that our vendors onward leasehold purchase has 18 outstanding enquiries from September. She had put her offer in May 2021. This was apparently news to her and her estate agent. It was also news to our estate agent as they had been informed there was no onward and she would rent, by our vendors estate agent.
Amendments needed to leasehold. Freeholder has finally this week appointed a solicitor to deal with the enquiries, causing such a delay that the leaseholder has sought legal advice regarding his delaying the sale.
Freeholders solicitor is radio silent on how long this could take to sort. Our buyer and our buyers buyer getting very twitchy and keen to progress. Do not think the bottom of the chain will stick around as they are living with parents and a newborn, ready to complete.
My question is, how long do we wait? I am being told various things by the liar of an estate agent, who apparently told our vendor that if we drop out they will simply remarket and sell the next day.
I have gone back onto the local estate agents list for notification of new property, so very saddened indeed. Anyone else had a nightmare like this?

I guess it all depends on how much you want this property. If you want it, then you will be prepared to wait. How long I will take from now is one of those impossible to answer questions. Sounds like delays that should have been addressed some time ago.0
