IHT forms

Am I right??

IHT205 - small estate - assumed on inheritance tax due
IHT400 - larger estate - assumed tax due

Small estate.....
Do I have to wait for the IHT to confirm no tax payable before I apply for probate???
Or, can you apply for both at the same time???

  • I take it you are doing it all online.

I completed and sent off the IHT 205 (and 217) in the morning and then did the probate in the afternoon. There was no IHT to pay.

On submitting the IHT you get a notice showing

    IHT Identifier xxxx xxxx xxx-xxx

    Gross Estate Figure £xxxxxx

    Net Estate Figure £xxxxxx

Recommend that you print this off.

When applying for probate you include the IHT Identifier and they can link the two together.

IHT217 is only needed if you need the allowance from the first death to add to the allowance of the second death in order to increase the allowance below tax. This can also be done for the Residential Allowance to make a total of £1,000,000 of all allowances before tax.
