At midnight (when I was fast asleep) a contact in my phone received a "Hermes parcel delivery - click on this link" message, which came from MY phone. How do the scammers do that and does it mean my phone is compromised in any way?

It might, but I think it's more likely that the scammers just spoofed using a random number, because having a Hermes alert coming from a friend should immediately flag the message as extremely suspicious. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0

Scammers are able to make the 'from' number pretty much anything they want.0
