New Gas supply

I've recently recieved a grant to have central heating installed.
With this I am having to get a meter installed with British Gas.
I rang to get this sorted and have had to enter in to a contract with them. They have put me on the cheapest tariff which is fixed till Nov 23 - 7.722 unit price and 42.563 standing charge.
I was shocked at the standing charge. I was hoping and under the impression that I could get them to install the meter and then choose another supplier who I could also have my electric with.
Is this right? Is there anything I can do, or is it best to ride it through?

When I spoke to British gas about having a new meter installed, I was asked specifically if I want to be a customer of British gas during the phone call. If they didn't ask, you might have some redress by following that avenue, possibly?0

Lad on the Hill thank you for your response

The lady I spoke to didn't ask that question. Though as she started to go in to details I did ask if I had to have them as my supplier and go in to contract, as I was only wanting the meter installed.
Wonder if they've changed tactics with all this energy business going on.0
