My old tariff finished on 31st Dec edf moved me on to new tariff on 1st Jan which they say is their cheapest ( Safeguard Assist Capped .am I correct in the following calculations.

Electricity old tariff  13.48 kwh
Electricity new Tariff 20.60 kwh   = 52.189% increase
crease.
Electricity old standing charge 19.50
New standing charge               25.09 = increase 28.6 %
Gas old tariff  2.622 kwh
Gas new tariff 4.047 kwh     = 54.347 % increase
Gas old standing charge       19.50 kwh
New standing charge             26.12 kwh  = 33.98 %increase
Now whats worrying the hell out of me is the new 56% increase in April going to be added to this as that would mean a 110 % increase in my energy bill in three months.

It seems to me the only way an O.A.P can keep themselves warm this winter is to set themselves on fire ,   ( Joking just in case the woke people pile in)

  • Yes you are correct in your calculations, the new rates announced today will be in the region of 7p for Gas and 28p for Electric plus whatever standing charge per day (this is likely to be more than the current 25p-26p)

So your Elec price will have doubled and Gas almost tripled in those 3 months. Not much you can do about it unfortunately, most people are in the same boat, many have been paying higher prices then you for many months now if that's any consulation.

  • “Woke people” as you call them originally meant people that cared about social equality, not some humourless gang trying to ruin the “can’t stay anything these days” fun.

But I agree. This whole thing is terrifying. The calculations and rates you posted look in line with what we’re being told to expect to have to pay and it doesn’t sound like anyone up top cares enough about the little people to stop it forcing people into debt and poverty.

Yes, your new tariff looks to be consistent with the current Ofgem cap.

Yes, the new cap has electricity at 28p/kWh (+25%) and gas at 7p/kWh (+75%) and standing charges increasing too.

Unfortunately your existing rates are very close to the current cap which expires at the end of March.  Assuming that it's a variable tariff then you can expect EDF to put the rates up to close to the new cap so you'll be hit with a massive increase like everyone else.
You'll benefit from the Chancellor's £200 loan announced today (but it only spreads the problem over five years) and possibly from the council tax change, but energy is certainly going to become even more expensive.  You're luckier than many who don't have gas, so make sure that you never use electricity for room or water heating (no electric showers !) and check that your insulation is good enough.
Keep an eye out for fixes that are lower than the new cap if wholesale prices fall in the coming months.

Misleading how, exactly? They are on Ofgem's webpage, after all?

For DD payment on a dual-fuel tariff with single-rate electricity, I make it 7.48p for gas and 28.41p for electricity in the Sputh West.
