You have learned a very tough lesson. Please follow other's advice and set up a Gmail account or similar. In these days of constant company changes it makes a lot of sense to have an independent email account giving you to opportunity to change providers as you may wish.

Gmail could cease just as Virgin Media email ceased.
The problem is that the OP did not get off a sinking ship before it sank.  It is part of modern life to need to inform all your contacts from time to time of any change in email address, physical address or phone numbers.

Although that would cause a lot of problems for people with android phones.

The only way to be completely sure is to register your own domain and run your own MX, everything else is putting control of some part of the process into the hands of someone else.  We'll assume that DNS will continue working in all circumstances.

Well no it wouldn't actually.  Because you don't need an email address to use Android.  You do for Play Store but that doesn't have to a Gmail address (much like a Microsoft account doesn't need to be a Hotmail/Outlook/MSN address).  Its sort of baked into the infrastructure/instructions that you need Gmail, but you don't.  It makes life easier for integration into Android, but its not a necessity.

I gave up using my virgin.net email account a very long time ago, but having just tried it I'm surprised to find that it's still working.
