We are fitting a Hansgrohe shower mixer bar. What do we need to attach this S join

To these pipes?

The answer I'm not looking for is 'a plumber' !!

Yes you attach the narrower end to the pipe using a compression fitting. The wider end will be what your mixer bar screws on to1

Oh, make sure you put it on the right way up. The temperature controller usually controls how much cold goes in rather than hot. Ours was installed upside down!Pensions actuary, Runner, Dog parent, Homeowner1

It might just be the photo, but those pipes look like different widths. Best get a ruler out.Pensions actuary, Runner, Dog parent, Homeowner0

The installation instructions for the shower show the female thread pretty flush with the (finished tiled) wall, so if we use the female compression adapter, I guess we need to make the hole around the pipes bigger in order to get a spanner in to fit it?
Otherwise it will stick out too far.0 -
You should have fitted wall plate elbows prior to plaster
use a fast fix bar kit now but you need to ensure you can get a good fixing for the screws so either timber into the wall of stud or make sure the masonry is soundHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Sorry, I just remembered I actually used one of these:

So if I replace the above with the one from the wall plate kit - will it still work?
The best option seems to be to fit a female connector to the end of the pipe, then fit a flat wall plate to the wall before tiling to keep the pipes fixed in place, but I can't find a wall plate that comes without the other fixings.0 -
I've got a Grohe bar shower and used fast fit fixings like in the link below and did away with the supplied pipe shroud. I did need to swap the stalks on the shower valve though as they were brass finish but as a plumber I had some chrome ones in my scrap bucket that I robbed off an old bar shower.
There might be a version of below that will fit within the footprint of the existing shroud.
Do check it will work with your shower bar as they can be slightly different lengths and not allow the fixing nuts on the bar to tighten up.

When tiling / having it tiled, turn the water off and remove the stop ends from the pipe so you don't have to cut a massive hole in the tiles to go over the pipes or you might struggle to get a good fixing for the screws.Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.1
