Jack's was their experiment on stack them high sell them cheap supermarkets.

There were 13 in the UK of which 7 will close and the other 6 will become Tesco's supermarkets.

  • Some of 7 due to close are on the same site as existing large Tesco stores (e.g. Barnsley).  Their closure may impact staff but won't affect customers much.

The one near me never has more than a handful of customers in it, they stopped opening manned checkouts ages ago. Most people just buy a few items in there, Even at the height of the pandemic when other supermarkets had ques snaking round the carpark there were only ever about 30 in the que. I walk past it quite often sometimes there are more staff than customers. I am surprised it has lasted as long as it has.
  • Tried to outlidl Lidl & failed miserably!
  • Jacks was awful. It reminded me of Netto. Tried to be like Aldi/lidl but with Tesco prices!
it was never going to work.

Well they closed the Jacks store on my route to and from work and reopened it as a Tesco and you wouldn't know the difference.  They've left all the fixtures and fittings from the Jacks store and they don't have anywhere near the levels of stock or offers that Tesco has.  I never understood why they switched it, the store was in a prime location and did great business and once the woefully inferior Jacks opened custom fell right off.  It never compared with Aldi or Lidl (both of which I like) and was more like Netto or Kwik Save at best.

@Madison. At work, we make or did make several snack products for Jacks, It's really just Tesco's value range with the Jack's packaging.

We used Jack's at Barnsley as our main food shop for 3 years until it closed. Yes, it was mainly Tesco basics with a Jack's label on but the fruit and veg and fresh meat was cheaper than in the Tesco store nearby. It was simple no fuss shopping.

The staff were friendly and helpful and it was nice to chat to familiar faces each week. We do miss it. I was never a fan of Tesco and we now swap between Aldi and Lidl but find most of their staff barely speak except to say cash or card as they throw your items past the scanner at lightning speed. Jack's, we miss you.
