Solar and getting a smart meter

Hi Everyone
I have just installed, at great cost, solar panels. I am producing enough power, even in this weather, that some is going back to the grid. I would like to sign up to the SEG scheme but it is proving impossible. I have a Smet1 installed by NPower. When EON took over, the meter became redundant. I moved to Scottish Power, but the meter is still unusable. I am going round in circles, being told
1. yes you're on the list for an upgrade to a smet2
2. No you can't have a new meter as you already have one, even if it doesn't work.
3. we've popped you on our manual list for a new meter
4. our technicians are working on being able to upgrade your current meter to be compatible
With no time frame being given. In the summer I will be producing more than enough, even with a battery, which will mean a lot will be going to the grid. As my tariff is going to more than double from April, it is frustrating to know that I will be sending power back to the grid and not being compensated, whilst being charged a fortune for any I use.
I have tried contacting other suppliers, which is in itself a nightmare. Long waiting times on the phone, to end up speaking to someone who hasn't a clue. Then the inevitable passing from dept to dept and finally the line mysteriously dropping out. Emails not being answered.
Does anyone know what I can do?
Fingers crossed in anticipation that someone out there will have a solution

What is the make and model of your SMETS1 meter? If it is a Secure meter then it is possible that Octopus will be able to read it as a SMETS1 meter and, in time, migrate it across to the DCC network.

For you to get SEG, a supplier will need to see your MCS Certification and any DNO approval for your system. The supplier will then apply to the DNO for a second MPAN for your meter to cover all export payments.

PM me if you need help to get through to the right team at Octopus.
  • What do you mean when you say the meter is 'unusable'?

I have a SMETS1 meter and I provide export readings to my supplier each month. This works in much the same way as if you change suppler and the meter goes dumb for a while, you just have to take a reading off the meter itself. On a Secure meter this involves pressing 9 so the display cycles through import and export readings.

Once your meter gets migrated to the DCC network it will send import readings automatically but you'll still have to send export readings manually.
