How can I - under UK law - return an oven that I bought brand new & online

As an update, I have had an engineer from Hotpoint out to look at it. He says it is not a fault.
As I find it impossible to see the icons which don't light up, someone has now suggested that it is Not Fit For Purpose. Do I have any options with the "Not Fit For Purpose" argument, or any other arguments? As the salesman in the Curry's shop (I later purchased it online at their website) said that the icons & control panel all light up, is there an argument that it is "Not As Described"? The unlit icons are not able to be seen against the black background on the display panel: they are too thin a graphic, plus are on a very shiny reflective glossy black surface. Not a good/usable feature at all! And a style that is a very poor design choice by the manufacturer.
The oven was £300+, and was produced by a supposedly reputable manufacturer AND seller. If we had purchased a shoddy brand from a shoddy shop, we'd have understood the risk. But we investigated the item in depth before we made our choice. So we are extremely 'peeved' about this purchase not being what we were told.
but as you bought online it depends if the oven matched the description on the website as to whether it is as described.
what model did you purchase?0 -
I wouldn’t call Hotpoint reputable. They’re a budget brand and quite frankly are shoddy from past experience. And Curry’s don’t exactly deploy the most knowledgeable of people on their shop floors.1

The oven seemingly is 'Fit for purpose' it's more a case that you don't like the displays. You may have reasons for not liking them which are valid to you but that is a very different thing. I find the controls on our double oven anything but intuitive to the point where after 3 years I still need to keep the user guide to hand if I want to use automatic functions. That's annoying but doesn't make it not fit for purpose.

O.p., why are you reluctant to reveal the model number?I would suspect that the product description/features mention nothing about an illuminated display?0

Yes OP, please reveal the oven model number - without it a lot is just speculation.
Nothing wrong with speculation - I enjoy a good speculate as much as the next poster on here but it doesn't really help you.0
