How much did your renovation cost? Rewiring? Plastering? Extension? Comments your Reno prices below

Just curious what people actually do pay on the work you had done to your homes.

I'm currently located in West Sussex and I've had quotes in excess of £60k to extend the top of my garage to a third bedroom keeping the garage intact. £60k to me, seems considerably expensive and despite the 'material has gone up' excuse, im sure people in different locations are paying less.

Does your garage have adequate footings or is this something that needs to be fixed? A lot of the money for my bumper extension went on the foundations. What I thought was a very minor alteration to a doorway added another £2k which felt like a lot at the time but I don't regret it.

  • @Rosa_Damascena - footings should be good to build ontop. Still awaiting structural feedback but the architect is confident steel beams on each side should be sufficient.

    How old is the house?

'Prices have gone up' is not an excuse.  We've been subject to hyperinflation that I have never experienced.  I don't even know in my gut what things cost anymore.  One piece of solid insulation is now 100% more than it was 2 years ago and it wasn't cheap then.  And it's everything.  Bricks for a wall I had quoted went up 50% in 7 months.  Every single one of our subcontractors, without exception got a significant pay rise last year.  The plasterer alone went up 24% a day.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

  • Last year we had a single storey side extension and remodelling of part of the downstairs to form a new kitchen, utility room and shower room as well as a store room accessed externally. We didn't touch the hallway or two reception rooms.

The main contractor took £96,000 all in including underpinning parts of the existing external walls and a new floor slab in part of the existing ground floor where there were previously just quarry tiles on earth. This included all subcontractor labour.

With separate sums spent on bathroom, kitchen, and utility fittings and appliances, as well as fees to architect, engineer and the council, the total spend was in the range £120,000 to £125,000.

This is in one of the more expensive parts of South Wales.
