Student financial help. HELP!

My son 24 is studying at full time at uni in his first year. He’s got his student loan, but that barely covers his living expenses. I’m trying to navigate the world of extra help, but I’m not really getting anywhere! So I could do with some help please. Also if you know of any help that might not be well known. A few background pieces of info. My son is studying at Goldsmiths  uni in London His father & myself have separated. He is on a low income which is below £14000 P/Y. I’m on PIP & ESA. Thank you in advance.

Your son’s student loan is calculated on household earnings. So if you and your husband have separated it would be based on the income of whoever your son lives with. I’m assuming it is you, as you are posting here.

if you are on benefits I’m guessing that your son receives the maximum loan/ grant available. He should also check with his university that being on a max grant may make him eligible for some support from the university.

Over and above that, it’s whatever support you and his father feel able to contribute.

The hard fact is that living in London is expensive, only partly mitigated by the extra loan available to those studying in London. The upside is that part time jobs should be more readily available in London than in more rural places, so your son should be able to find some part time work to supplement his grant and loan.
