Main cooker wall socket a little hot.

HI folks,

Just noticed today that the main cooker on off switch wall socket switch is little hot, after cooker main oven was on for about 3/4 of an hour. Its about a foot from left side of cooker.

Something to worry about or not. I do have a good hager fuse box installed which seems to work good, has tripped a few times when bulbs fused etc.

But anyway should I worry about cooker wall socket switch getting a little warm?

Many thanks for any info.

A switch shouldn't get warm.  The obvious thing - is it just heat radiating from the cooker that's causing it?  If so then no issue.
Otherwise, if you're confident to do so, have a quick look inside it.  Make absolutely sure to switch off the power to that circuit at the fusebox before you do anything.  If you're in any doubt, use the master switch to kill all the power to the house.  Remove the face-plate and check that all the wires are securely located and the terminals are screwed down tightly.  Check for any signs of scorching.  If any of the wires are even slightly loose, this can cause problems - but it's easy enough to re-seat them if necessary and tighten the screws.  Hope this helps.
  • Thanks for the advice. Will give it another check next time it's been on for a while.
There is a red light about 2/3  the size of a postage stamp directly above the switch to indicate whether cooker is on or now, can I take it that light doesn't generate any heat that might warm the switch?

I did replace the main oven element about 18 months ago myself during lockdown as it had gone, but so far that seems to be working ok, so hopefully not a sign of element going again.

Will take all the precautions if I have to take off the faceplate.

    Thanks once again.

The light will (probably) be a neon lamp - These generate almost zero heat.
If the switch is getting hot, it is either being heated by a ring on the cooker, or there is a loose wire inside. Outside chance that the switch is faulty, but that is unlikely.

Loose connection inside. That causes heat build up.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

A bit warm is probably fine.  Most domestic wiring and accessories are rated for 70C maximum, and when run at high power they do warm up a bit.  But if the parts you touch are more than a bit warm, then the chances are that the bits you can't see are getting too hot.

Either a loose connection, or a switch that's failing.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
