Hi. Newbie here. Overdraft question

My wife ran up debts which we cleared about 18 months ago. I just opened a letter addressed to her (we agreed at the time of the debt that I needed to take charge for a while and deal with communications) and its about her overdraft on the account we cleared. Its just a general letter about reducing the overdraft limit.

It states overdraft limit £4000.
Account balance £DR.  That's exactly what it states, no numbers.

What does that mean for the balance?

DR means a debit balance. But it sounds like a production error as there's no figure and you say she's no longer in her OD.
  • Thank you. The truth is I am wondering if she has racked up debt again. So I was hoping it just meant zero.

I would get her to call the bank & get the O/D removed.

    Ask her?

I get that the original debt may have involved an element of deception, but surely there needs to be some sort of trust established 18 months after it was settled, or do you anticipate opening her mail on an ongoing basis?  Anyone sufficiently determined to evade scrutiny is likely to be able to do so without incriminating paperwork being visible, so, although it's a wider issue than the one you directly asked about, I'd respectfully suggest that the two of you need to build up some workable ground rules if you're going to continue married life together.

Or alternatively, you could check her credit files....!
