There is still a plan to upgrade SMETS1 meters to SMETS2 by the end of this year via an over the air software upgrade.... unless covid has knocked that back.  This article is helpfully not dated 🙄

I believe similar articles have been appearing for several years and am quietly confident that it will be several more before we see one announcing that the process has been completed.

Covid gets the blame for a lot of things,  but it's very hard to see how it might affect an 'over the air' software upgrade !  The whole point of an OTA process is to avoid any need for the person applying the upgrade to visit the target premises so he/she would be unlikely to catch or pass on any sort of disease whilst carrying it out.  Indeed,  if the operator was indeed covid affected,  he/she could probably run the process from their sickbed.

We seem to  e discussing on two thread :D

Covid has been a great excuse to cut employees and make customer service the appalling mess it is now.   If you've tried to catch a flight, get a passport or just call the bank recently you can experience the pain.

Glad you got it sorted Screwdriva. I find the Outgoing Agile tariff adds a bit of fun and even helps me decided what/how  to cook for dinner. If it's a 40p-ish evening peak I'm cooking on gas (hob over oven) or the slow cooker will have been on earlier lol
Cheers! I'm amazed at how much more it pays in the late afternoon/ evening. We've learnt to switch off all consumption during that time.

Any thoughts on the best import tariff to match it? We are currently on their flexible tariff.

There's been a lot of discussion on the main "Energy" forum and there's a school of thought that Agile is the best incoming tariff too. Currently it's working out more expensive than Flexible but the 35p/kWh cap on Agile could come into its own in October when Flexible is expected to be over 41-43p/kWh.
There's speculation that, some time after June but before mid-October, Octopus will announce an Agile v2 with a higher cap.

I'm also thinking of changing Tracker to Agile for electric supply but I've got to wait out the 30 days as I only went from Flexi to Tracker on 17th June.

  • @QrizB and @Spies were either of you thinking of moving to Agile for import? I guess the question is whether the 35p cap will stay after October. I am at the point of signing up now but am wobbling.

Not sure what's best! It will cost me an additional 28p a day based on 4kWh used from the grid

My current Go contract is good to the end of September. If Octopus don't let me renew on Go, as I've got a 5kWh battery I'm wondering about E7. It will depend on the rates available then. The current Loyal fix is 28-29p/kWh on the E7 night rate, which is probably all I'll need unless we get another December like 2021 (when I barely scraped 40kWh generated all month).

    Thanks both.

The standing charge is only 21p. So with a similar usage to yours @Spies, I think it it's going to be pretty much cost neutral. If it is is honoured beyond October, should be quids in. If not then I can instantly switch to the standard tariff.

Edit: just gone for it. All done within 24 hours if you are already exporting with half hour readings.

It seems that the Agile Tariff rates (21p standing charge, 35p cap) are fixed for 1 year:
