Hardwiring a phone charger for in the car?

  • Are you two agreeing with each other or not then? I'm not sure.

I was going to go that route as that's how the car audio guy installed my dash cam years ago.

And as born_again was saying, unless i misunderstood him/her - I wasn't going to connect a cigarette lighter to the fuse box, i was looking at connecting a 12v female to the fuse box - to accept a 12v male adapter.

We're in agreement that the lighter socket is still a lighter socket despite a lighter to plug into it being an optional extra and the name change. Most new car buyers are delighted.

  • So what's so bad about it then?

I'm asking the question trying to learn something but you seem to be upset that I dare ask?
I haven't yet mastered the MSE way of 'just knowing'.

    ???

All you would need to do is use a piggyback setup fuse for a dash cam, as that will step the 12V down to 5V usb & run the output to your phone. Just making sure that it has the right usb plug at phone end.

Bizarre that you think I'm upset, I'm indifferent about your choice but you asked for alternatives. What you've suggested will work but a charger/power supply designed for a lighter socket is used for convenience, not because of its electronic functionality.

Then it seems like there's a total misunderstanding throughout because I did not ask for alternatives at all.

I'm chancing it here because I'm not going back to the OP to check on that but i'm 99.9999999999% sure that I did not say anything about "alternative" or anything on the lines of "i'm thinking of this but would like a different way of doing it".

I simply wanted a way that would work....the end.

Now if there was a better way then I'm not hard headed - I'd be open to suggestions of a better way but like I said earlier, I'm trying to learn - so just saying it's better is pointless. I'd like to know why it's better.

This of course assumes that there may be a better way, as different doesn't necessarily mean better, or worse, just different.

I've no idea why you posted then.  You asked for input, then got defensive when alternatives were suggested.

My theory was to hard wire a 12v female [lighter socket] in to the fuse box behind the glovebox. In the 12v female [lighter socket] would be a 12v USB adapter such as so. From this would be a USB cable which I would have to pull through behind the radio, take the clocks out and pull it behind there, out of the side & up the door rubber and across so only a bit is poking out.

Do this. It'll work, you'll be happy.

    Hardly. But nice twist.

You say I got defensive when alternatives were suggested.

I say I wanted to know why B might be better than A as since I stated in the OP, I'm not great at electronics so therefore I'd like to learn why B is better than A.

So then I say others got defensive when I didn't say yes sir no sir ill do that right away without trying to understand anything sir.

1 situation, wildly different views from either side.

I'll have to remember that trying to learn in future will upset a few people. How dare I.
