Just wondering what is the cheapest deal to keep an active landline for incoming calls only? Even if only to somehow redirect to a mobile number.

It seems bonkers in this day and age to pay monthly rental for a landline.

Well you pay monthly rental for lots of things, why is the phone line any different?

To answer your question - get a combi internet/phone bundle, it doesn't get any cheaper.  You do realise even if you redirect the calls to a mobile you will be charged at landline rate?

I appreciate where you are coming from, but it's poor form to say you pay monthly for a bunch of other things so one more thing will be alright. Down the line everything will be VOIP and it will be even more absurd that we pay a monthly line rental to use our own internet for calls. I'm just wondering whether there is any no frills, basic option available or is everyone blindly paying £20pm for line rental still?

As I said - if you get a bundle the line rental is (package providing) relatively moot - its either inclusive or heavily discounted.
On a BT line setup you need the phone line to bring the internet in.  That's the way it always has been.
If there is a fault you phone up the provider and they get somebody from Openreach out to come and fix it, that's included in your rental.  If there was no rental agreement you would have to fork out yourself for every issue you had or thought you had.

There are options for internet only.  But they are usually more expensive than a landline/broadband solution would be.

I would say probably Vodafone. You pay for broadband only. No phone line rental. You only pay extra for landline to either make a call, or subscribe to Unlimited calls. BT charge £5 more a month for landline.

No doubt someone will now mark me as spam, or claim I have some kickback from Vodafone next.

To clarify, Vodafone broadband includes a landline to receive calls with no line rental.

That's the answer then, get a VOIP service.
