My DS also refuses to eat shop-bought bread anymore! It's rare that we buy it now anyway, but I got caught short one day, having forgotten to put the BM on, and we decided to have soup for lunch and wanted bread to go with it so DS popped over the shop to get some bread rolls. They were the Hovis ones, which we used to love! ... but neither of us could eat them as they just tasted weird compared to the HM bread we've got so used to

My children are obsessed with HM and healthy eating now.

The youngest (age 6) has taken it a bit too far, and comes in every day slagging somebody elses packed lunch off. He was horrified because someone had jam sandwiches and nothing savoury yesterday, and a girl had cold chicken nuggets. He said he told her how they were made from all the rubbish blasted off chicken bones and they were full of chemicals. I'm wondering if I need to apologise to peoples Mums this morning :o

We've just started getting an organic fruit and veg box delivered every Thursday. They're both desperate to get home from school that night to see what's in the box and are looking forward to next week as they'll be on school hols, so they'll be here when it arrives! They've tried and enjoyed veg that they previously didn't like, and were thrilled with yesterdays as we got a whole Brussels sprout branch. They didn't know that they grew like that!

My hubby insisted for years that I have burgers and things like this for him to cook when I'm not there. Until I made some burgers a few weeks ago. Now the freezers groaning with mostly home made stuff, varying from burgers and sausages, through to currys, stews and soups.
DS had tea at his cousins and they had chicken nuggets, told his auntie - Thanks but mummys are better!! (not really chicken nuggets but chicken breast cut up small, occasionally with breadcrumbs.)
OS is a way of life for me, can't understand people that spend fortunes on convenience foods.

Bought tomato sauce (ended with mio) - tried it once and never again, it wasn't nice.

I know lots of people used to buy that in my student days - I think there was (maybe still is?) hardly a student cupboard in the land without a jar of XXXmio in it - pretty awful stuff isn't it? And it is so easy to make a really good one yourself with a couple of tins of plum toms and some onions, garlic, herbs... probably cheaper too... It's like with filter coffee or freshly squeezed orange juice - the problem is once you have tried the 'real thing' anything instant or processed just tastes sooooo inferior in comparison, but if you have never tried the 'natural' version you may not know any better....

  • Hmm, well I'm not sure whether I'm envious or not! I have always cooked from scratch throughout our 26 year marriage but since the children have left home my OH seems to be going through some kind of midlife crisis. He complains about everything; doesn't like the HM bread (not square enough for his sandwiches), would rather have bought burgers (I'd rather cut off my right arm), loves ready meals and chips from the chippy, won't eat my HM soup...the list is endless. It's got to the point where he has his own drawer in the freezer full of the rubbish I have to buy from the supermarket for him and I make and eat my own meals. Not very moneysaving but maybe marriage saving?? Not sure..... FF
  • Frugalfairy I can sympathise to an extent. My OH does not really like my hm yoghurt, he will eat it but prefers the shop bought variety, he's also not keen on bm bread either (again he will eat it if there is nothing else) I recently made hm burgers, (yummy) hm fish pie with salmon, (also yummy) hm pizza (the nicest I have ever tasted) in fact I haven't bought a ready made meal now for probably two months.
OH came back from Sainsburys with some breaded lemon sole goujons, (OK, they are quite nice) and turned down my offer of a home cooked meal in favour of these with "pasta n sauce" (really yuk) he seems to be having ready meal withdrawal symptoms. He also refuses to give up his weekly pataks chicken tikka masala either. (I have to admit I like this too, although I havent eaten one for months now)
I have told him that he is very lucky to have me as some husbands do not have wives that cook from scratch at all! I dont think he appreciated this though.
Perhaps somewhere ot there in cyberspace the OH's of Old Stylers have their own anti Old Style site, with threads like "How do you break it to the wife that you prefer shop bought to her cooking!" :rotfl:
  • Yep, I reckon they're brothers all right :rotfl: Ah well, I'll just keep on doing what I've always done. Wouldn't mind but I love cooking and am good at it :( At least when the kids come home from uni they appreciate a home cooked meal!
  • Don't ever buy any of those "Aunt Betsy's" pre-prepaired food products (e.g. roast potatoes, yorkshire puddings, etc.).

They contain high levels of 'trans-fats', like many processed food stuffs, but more so. I read a "Which?" magazine report on them sometime ago, a summary of thich can be seen at the following link:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1321301,00.html

The magazine gave a much more scary conclusion than the above summary. In short, eating processed foods with trans-fats is far worse than eating saturated fats and will lead to heart problems and possibly cancer.

So make your own. Lazyness is no excuse for killing your family!!!!

My 8 year old son saw a ready made Yorkshires ad on the TV last night. He grumbled "for goodness sake, who can be so lazy they can't be bothered to whisk a bit flour, milk and egg together?" :rotfl:

My Family also prefer HM food to processed. Luckily my kids have always been open to trying different things. OH is just as interested in cooking good food as I am. When we move house I'm going to give the kids a day each to help me cook dinner so they learn how to cook. Regarding Becles post, one of my biggest dislikes at work is customers that go mad coz we have no RM yorkies at 3pm on sunday(also happens alot at xmas). I'd dearly love to point out the flour, eggs and milk and tell them to DIY!!
