Relocating to Cornwall

Options
Me and my husband look to relocate to cornwall this year.

We live in the South East.we are mortgage free and have ample savings in the bank.

I work in an admin role in yhe NHS and my husband is a driver.

Considering St Austell or Truro to be based within commutable distance for work.

Any suggestions on the above plan we have would be appreciated.

Thanks

Budget?  Do you prefer new build or character cottage?  What makes you want to move to Cornwall?  How do you feel about traffic noise?  How long a commute to your work places are you willing to accept?

Sorry, didn’t mean to be nosy or rude just trying to get an idea of your priorities to be better able to advise!

I prefer Truro to St Austel but it is more expensive and is oddly quiet in the evening.  It is a very small city so you can walk from the centre out into countryside in 20min or so which I really like.  The surrounding villages are nice - if didn’t mind ending away from the water I personally would look at Chacewater for good value and access to the A30.  If you have a bigger budget I would suggest Perranwell station which is on the Truro to Falmouth branch line and is a nice village with some lovely walking.

St Austell town centre is a little run down and doesn’t have the high street shops that Truro has.  There is more housing in the town than Truro so is probably a bit more choice if you want to be in the town.  There are some lovely (and pricey) villages on the coast to the south of St Austell and some very reasonably priced but rather odd villages inland in the China clay areas.  I don’t know the area as well as Truro.

I would suggest renting for a while (if you can find something!) so that you can spend some time in the different areas and see what suits you - different towns and villages can have very different characters despite being really quite close.

You will need to take into account the summer visitors and how that will affect your commute.  It takes us double the time to travel to our nearest town in the summer months with the extra traffic.
