Does anyone know if Cat D cars attract a higher insurance premium? My insurer left a CAT D marker on my car in error for 5 years following a minor incident with no damage to my car. I only found out after trying to part exchange it. They have now removed it and my renewal premium this year is down about 20%. They have suggested it has nothing to do with this.

In theory you'd argue it should result in lower premiums because of the impact on its value. Not sure if any insurers do MIAFTR checks on vehicles at quote stage though to be able to factor it in one way or the other.1

Most insurers don't even ask if the car has ever been written off so no, it tends not to affect the premiums. There may be insurers who do use it as a rating factor but if so they are few and far between.
If you've been with the same company for several years and your renewal premium has just decreased the most likely explanation is the new regulations that mean insurers have to offer the same terms to new and renewing customers, which means that in practice new customers will tend pay a bit more than in the past, and renewing customers will tend to pay a but less.1
