Many of my accounts have multiple payees with the same account number, not least as many have been switched into several times and have multiple instances of the same payee but with different references.  Some of them are a real mess of multiples and I need to do some tidying up.
Thanks, which banks are these with?
Can't give a definitive list without logging into them all and looking, but, from memory, Coop certainly, Santander I think, Halifax and Lloyds too I think.

Lloyds also allow it - and presumably Halifax and BoS.
Yes they do. Paid HMRC for us both using same account
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

An earlier post mentioned having multiple payees for the same account following multiple switching. This would not happen in the NatWest Group.

When switching to NatWest, any potential duplicate payees resulted in the existing payee being replaced with the switched payee.

For example, I had a payee in NatWest with the reference “NatWest to Halifax”. Following the switch, the same payee in NatWest had acquired the reference “Santander to Halifax”.

This was clearly confusing and I had to change the reference back.

Well.. apologies. I'm amazed I've not seen this mentioned on here before..

So if you have for example, multiple RSs with one or more of the Building Societies using clearing banks, you clearly can't be using the RBS group as a hub, or at least not without major manual intervention?

OTTOMH I have 8 accounts with one BS using clearing banks so one sort code and ac number, and 6/7 with another... and that's without checking! Glad I use Santander, then.

I prob shouldn't make assumptions about how bad Nat West group can be as I don't use them.

You're right. It's not very good but not a major issue for me.

When confronted with this I have either just changed the reference (ie my building society a/c no.) or used an instant access BS account as a hub and then transferred across to the actual BS account.

As do First Direct (part of HSBC but app is different). If you edit the reference it automatically saves a new payee.
